LOWELL, Mass. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team played to a 14-4 win at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Tuesday, March 19.
1st Quarter: The Friars jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. Providence's
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.),
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) and
Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) scored goals to make it 3-0, before the River Hawks responded. Hatzipetrakos and Grillo each got their second goal of the game in the closing minutes of the quarter. Grillo's diving effort goal came with just 15 seconds on the clock.
2nd Quarter: Providence continued its outstanding offensive effort, scoring five more goals to increase the lead to 10-1 before halftime.
Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.),
Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.),
Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.),
Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Hatzipetrakos were the five different goal scorers for the Friars.
3rd Quarter: UMass Lowell opened scoring in the third quarter, but Providence responded with goals from Kearns and Axelson to push the lead to 12-2.
Nick Shaw scored the final Friar goal of the third quarter, with 2:59 left on the clock.
Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) replaced
Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) in net at the conclusion of the third quarter. Boyce exited the game with seven saves and just three goals against.
4th Quarter: The fourth quarter featured just two total goals. Jake Lining scored a man-up goal for the River Hawks, before Axelson closed out the game's scoring with 12:40 remaining. Burgdorf made two saves in net during his 15:00 of action.
Game Notes:
- Hatzipetrakos and Kearns led the Friars offensively with four points apiece.
- Hatzipetrakos had had three goals and an assist for four points. He's now had seven consecutive games with a hat trick or better.
- Grillo, Nawrocki and Axelson each had three points for Providence.
- Axelson recorded his second-straight multi-goal game, as he had four goals at Hofstra and three tonight at UMass Lowell.
- The four goals allowed are the lowest for the Friars since Feb. 24, 2018 when Providence held Saint Joseph's to three.
- It is the Friars' largest margin of victory since Feb. 15, 2014 when Providence defeated Wagner, 17-6.
- The win improves Providence's record to 4-4, while UMass Lowell drops to 3-5 on the season.
