EAST MEADOW, N.Y.– The Providence College Friars competed in the 2019 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 20-23 in East Meadow, N.Y. The Friars set twelve program records over the course of the four-day meet.Â

On day one, the team of
Justin Viotto (Morristown, N.J.),
John Freeman (New Rochelle, N.Y.),
Andrew Ferrell (Atlanta, Ga.) and
Liam Straker (South Glastonbury, Conn.) bested the previous mark (6:49.12, 2014) in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:46.69.
Juliet McGlaughlin (Westchester, Pa.),
Abigail Czerniecki (Haddonfield, N.J.),
Katie Thornton (Fairfield, Conn.) and
Lauren Zawacki (Marshfield, Mass.) reached the wall in1:45.63. The time was nearly two seconds faster than the Friar standard set in 2017 (1:47.12).

On the second day of the meet Zawacki set a new program record in the 50-yard freestyle when she touched the wall at 23.88. The team of Thornton,
Jennifer Bankes (Boxford, Mass.), Keenan and Zawacki set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.92). In the 200-yard IM, Ferrell swam a 1:51.28. The time was good enough for a program record in the event.

On day three of the meet the Friars set four program records. Sophomore Zawacki improved upon the school mark in the 50-yard freestyle with her time of 57.20. The team of McGlaughlin, Czerniecki, Thornton and Bankes set a new record in the 400-yard medley relay (3:53.16). Viotto bested the program's 400-yard IM record with his 3:58.09 mark. Ferrell touched the wall at 50.25, good enough for a new school record and a fourth place finish.

On the final day of the meet the Friars set three new program bests. In the 200-yard breaststroke
Amanda Gaccione (Secaucus, N.J.) reached the wall in 2:22.78. Later, Viotto set a new Friar mark with a time of 1:50.12 in the 200-yard fly.
Ryan Trammell (Lake Mary, Fla.) bested his own mark in the 200-yard breaststroke, improving the standard to 2:03.17.
