Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss Of The Season To Yale, 82-79

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team returned to New Haven, Conn. to resume play against Yale on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The game, originally scheduled for Nov. 5, was suspended at halftime due to a clock/scoreboard malfunction. Despite a nine-point lead entering the third quarter, the Friars suffered their first loss of the season, 82-79. The Friars dropped to 5-1 on the year, while Yale improved to 6-2 overall.

FIRST HALF RECAP:
• The Friars held a 42-33 lead at halftime, and were paced by Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) and Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.), who each scored 12 points.

• Providence led by as many as 16 in the second quarter (38-22), but the Bulldogs managed to cut the deficit to seven (40-33) with 27-seconds left.

• Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) knocked down a baseline jumper at the buzzer to send Providence to the locker room at halftime with a 42-33 advantage.

• Providence committed 15 fouls in the first half, allowing Yale to record 13 of their 33 points (13-19).

THIRD QUARTER:
• Providence started the quarter with a pair of free throws due to an administrative technical foul, as Yale added players to the scorebook that were not previously entered.

• Spiwak made both free throws to give the Friars an 11-point lead before Yale gained possession of the ball.

• The Friars got out to a 17-point lead with 7:22 on the clock, but a 16-0 run by Yale tied the game, 54-54.

• Baskerville halted the run with a short jumper from the right block to give Providence a 56-54 advantage at the 1:27 mark.

• Spiwak drained a three-pointer in transition to put Providence up five, but Yale answered with a three on the other end to help Providence maintain a two-point lead at the break (59-57).

FOURTH QUARTER:
• Yale scored four-straight points to start the fourth quarter, giving the Bulldogs a 61-59 lead.

• The two teams traded baskets and the Friars eventually regained the lead with five-straight points from Spiwak and Baskerville with 6:39 to play (68-66).

• Yale answered with a 5-0 spurt to take a 71-68 advantage with 5:18 remaining in the game and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

• Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) hit a pair of free throws with 22-seconds left on the clock to cut Yale's lead to 81-79.

• Yale called timeout and committed an offensive foul during the inbounds play, giving the Friars possession and a chance to tie the game, or go ahead with a three.

• Providence turned the ball over with four seconds left and was forced to foul the Bulldogs with one tick left on the clock.

• Yale sealed the game at the line, hitting one of two free throws, for the 82-79 victory.

GAME NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Baskerville finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in just 16 minutes of action overall.

• Spiwak completed the night with 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, including 2-4 from three-point territory.

• Webb notched 15 points, hitting 5-9 attempts from the three-point arc.

• Roxy Barahman netted 17 second-half points for Yale, after being held to just two points in the first half on Nov. 5.

• Ellen Margaret Andrews added 16 second-half points on her way to a game-high 23 in the game.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Friars return to action at the 4^th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Bryant University at the Chace Athletic Center in Smithfield, R.I. Providence will face Bryant in the opening game of the tournament Saturday, Dec. 7 at Noon. Rhode Island and Brown will square off at 2:00 p.m. in the second game of the day. The consolation game will be played at Noon on Sunday, Dec. 8, with the championship game to follow at 2:00 p.m.
