Women's Basketball Defeats Bryant In Ocean State Tip-Off Opening Round, 76-32

Friars will face the winner of Brown/URI on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2:00 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I.

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Providence College women's basketball team advanced to the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game with a wire-to-wire win over host Bryant, 76-32, in the opening round. The Friars will play the winner of URI/Brown on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the championship game. All games in this year's tournament will be played at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. Providence improves to 6-1 on the season and Bryant drops to 1-7 overall.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Providence started the game on a 10-2 run, spanning three minutes of action. Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) led the charge with eight points.
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) chipped in with four points, four rebounds, one assist and a steal in the quarter.
Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) assisted on the glass with four rebounds.
•The Friars held the Bulldogs to 25-percent (3-12) from the field and forced six turnovers.
•Providence held a 17-10 lead after one.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
A layup by Baskerville with 8:31 remaining gave the Friars their first double-digit lead of the contest, 20-10.
•Providence began the quarter on a 12-1 run to extend the lead to 18.
•The Friars held the Bulldogs without a field goal until 6:08 remaining.
Ny-Asia Franklin's (East Orange, N.J.) face-up baseline jumper to beat the buzzer pushed the Friars' lead to 19 entering the break.
•Providence shot 7-10 from the field, including 2-3 from beyond the arc, and 4-7 from the line in the quarter.
•The Friars outscored the Bulldogs, 20-8 in the quarter and led 37-18 entering the half.
•Baskerville led all scorers at the break with 10 points.
•Providence held Bryant to 22.2% (6-27) from the field and 25% (2-8) from three-point range.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
Providence came out of the break on a 18-0 run.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored the final seven points in the quarter for Providence. 
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) chipped in with six points on the quarter.
•The Friars kept the Bulldogs scoreless until 1:51 remaining in the quarter.
•Providence shot 8-17 (47.1%) from the field and 3-7 (42.9%) from deep.
•Bryant's shooting struggles continued as they shot 2-16 (12.5%) from the field and 0-4 from three.
•Providence outscored Bryant 20-4 in the quarter. 
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
Franklin's baseline jumper extended the lead to 40 with 3:52 remaining.
Fatima Lee (Queens, N.Y.) led the Friars in the fourth with seven points.
•Providence won the quarter, 19-10
•Providence held Bryant to 3-13 from the field and 2-6 from deep.
 
GAME NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
Eleven different Friars cracked the scoring column with three in double figures. Baskerville led all players with 14 points on 6-9 shooting in just 15 minutes. Geary chipped in with 10. Lee scored her first collegiate points in the game and finished with 10 points on 4-7 shooting.
•Webb posted an all-around performance with seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
•Providence shot 30-65 (46.2%) from the field, 8-22 (36.4%) from deep and 8-12 (66.7%) from the stripe.
•Bryant struggled to score, shooting 11-56 (19.6%), 4-18 (22.2%) from three and 6-10 (60%) from the line.
•Providence never trailed in the game.
•The largest lead in the game was 44.
•Providence had 17 assists, forced 22 turnovers and scored 22 points off turnovers.
Providence leads the all-time series against Bryant, 8-1.
•The Friars will be making their second appearance in the Ocean State Tip-Off Championship Game. In 2016, Providence fell to Brown (77-70) in the championship game.

The Friars will play the winner of URI/Brown on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2:00 p.m. for the Ocean State Tip-Off title in Smithfield, R.I.
