Women’s Basketball Crowned Ocean State Tip-Off Champions After Defeating Rhode Island, 58-51

Mary Baskerville earned Tournament MVP honors; Earlette Scott was named to the All-Tournament Team.
SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Providence College women's basketball team claimed their first Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament championship after defeating Rhode Island, 58-51, in Smithfield, R.I. on Sunday, Dec. 8. Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) earned Most Valuable Player honors and Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament Team. Providence improves to 7-1 entering the break and Rhode Island drops to 6-3.
FIRST QUARTER:
•Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) hit the first field goal of the game with 7:28 remaining in the quarter.
• After leading 5-4, with all the Friar points coming from Spiwak, URI ran off a 7-0 run over a 2:36 span to take the lead.
•Baskets in the final two possessions from Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Scott pulled the Friars within two at the end of the quarter, 13-11.
•Providence struggled to find the bottom of the net, shooting 5-17 (29.4%) from the field and 1-4 (25%) from deep.
•Turnovers plagued the Friars in the first as they had six turnovers, turning into six Rams points.
SECOND QUARTER:
•A layup by Scott tied the game at 13, but URI responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead.
•Providence went on their own run (12-2) in just under five minutes, led by five points from Scott.
•The Friars picked up the defensive intensity, forcing seven turnovers in the second frame.
•Rhode Island outscored the Friars, 15-14, in the second quarter, giving them a 28-25 advantage heading into the half.
•Scott lead all scorers at half with 11, on 5-6 shooting.
•Despite losing the rebounding battle, 21-17, Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) led all players with nine rebounds to go with two assists.
•Providence shot 10-31 (32.3%) from the field, 3-8 (37.5%) from three-point land.
•Poor free-throw shooting kept the first half close, as the Rams only converted 3-10 from the stripe.
THIRD QUARTER:
•Baskerville took charge in the second half, scoring the first four points and forcing URI's Nicole Jorgensen into foul trouble.
•A free throw line jumper by Orlando knotted the game up, 31-31.
•URI answered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 38-31.
•Scott rattled off six-straight points for Providence to pull the game within one.
•An Orlando feed to Geary for a right wing three-pointer gave the Friars their first lead, since 3:01 remaining in the second.
•Providence entered the final frame ahead, 41-40.
•Providence forced another nine turnovers in the third, converting them into ten points.
•Scott lead all scorers in the quarter with seven points on 3-4 shooting.
FOURTH QUARTER:
•Providence struggled to score early in the quarter, missing their first five shots.
•Baskerville broke the drought with a layup at 5:30. This began a string of eight-straight points for Baskerville.
•Kaela Webb's (Pontiac, Mich.) pull-up baseline jumper with 2:19 regained the lead for the Friars, 53-51.
•Providence won their first Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament Championship, 58-81.
•Baskerville and Webb did all the scoring for the Friars in the fourth. Baskerville scored 11 and Webb chipped in with six.
GAME NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
•It was a career day for Scott and Orlando. Scott had career highs in points (18), field goals made (eight), minutes played (31). Orlando owned the glass, with a career-high 14 rebounds.
•Providence improves to 38-12 all-time against Rhode Island.
•In the final year of the Ocean State Tip-Off, the Friars claimed their first tournament championship.
•Baskerville was named tournament Most Valuable Player and Scott was named to the All-Tournament team.
•Providence shot 21-56 (37.5%) from the field and 4-13 (30.8%) from deep. The Friars only converted 12-21 (57.1%) from the line.
•Providence forced 28 turnovers, turning them into 25 points.
•Scott and Geary played a pivotal role for the Friars off the bench, with 26 points combined. Scott led the production with 18 and Geary with eight.

The Friars will return to action on Monday, Dec. 16 against Utah in non-conference action. The game will tip-off at 9:00 p.m. (ET) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Providence will remain on the road for three games at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Friars will face host New Mexico on Dec. 18 (9:00 p.m. ET), Ball State on Dec. 19 (6:30 p.m. ET) and Loyola Marymount on Dec. 20 (6:30 p.m. ET).
