PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team played a single game against the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday, March 20. Providence would drop the contest against URI and move to 3-16 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
-URI struck first, scoring three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead.
-Providence responded in the bottom of the first when Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.)
-URI loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) entered the game as a relief pitcher for starter Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.). Trinidad got out of the jam while only allowing one run to make the score 4-1 URI.
-Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) cut the lead in half with a single swing of the bat as she slammed a home run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-2.
-McCune brought the Friars within one run when she hit a shot to right center and drove in Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.).
-URI would score again in the top of the sixth, however, to extend their lead to 5-3.
-Providence was be unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and dropped the game, 5-3.
- In 3.0 innings of work, Ramirez allowed four runs (three of which were earned), four hits and struck out three. She was credited with the loss and dropped to 1-7 on the year.
-Trinidad pitched the final 4 innings, allowing one run, one hit and struck out one batter.

ON DECK:
The Friars game against the Fairfield Stags that was scheduled for Wednesday, March 21 was cancelled due to weather and field conditions. Providence will next play a weekend series against BIG EAST foe Georgetown on March 24-25. The three-game series against the Hoyas will mark the opening of Providence's conference schedule.
