PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College softball Head Coach Jill Karwoski announced today (Nov. 20) that four student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence as a member of the softball team. The Friars' class of 2019 consists of Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.), Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Pa.) and Mia Juodiatis (Cheshire, Conn.).

Magrino, a third basemen and pitcher, currently attends Mamaroneck High School. In over 358 innings of action, she recorded 446 career strikeouts and a 1.75 ERA. At the plate, she posted a .380 batting average, with her senior season starting in the spring. Magrino earned All-League, All-Section and All-State honors in her 2016 and 2017 seasons, and was named Pitcher of the Year in her league. During her showcase season she plays for Team Long Island Demarini, where she held a 1.706 ERA and .358 batting average during the fall season.

"We are excited Gianna decided to come to Friartown," Karwoski said. "With her versatility, she will make an immediate impact offensively and can see time defensively on the corners as well as on the mound."

Cunnigan, a pitcher for Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., will lead the pitching staff coming in. She was named the Corona Centennial Softball MVP in 2017 and was an All-League First-Team selection in 2017 and 2018. Cunnigan plays for the SoCal A's Briggs and helped the team place third in PGF Premium in 2017.

"Elysia will be an instant asset to our pitching staff," Karwoski said. "She is a movement pitcher with the ability to throw for power. Since meeting her, she continues to develop as a pitcher with potential to dominate in the BIG EAST."

Wren, an outfielder, played for Holy Redeemer High School, before transferring to Wyoming Seminary. In 2016 she was a 2016 AA State Champion, followed by a AAA State Runner-Up in 2018. Wren earned First-Team All-State honors from 2016-18. She has hit .478 during her career, including 23 home runs and 97 RBI in just 68 games.

"Tiana is a triple-threat athlete that can cover ground in the outfield, hit for gap and home run power as well as be effective on the base path with her high softball IQ."

Juodiatis, a utility player for Cheshire High School, hit .462 in 2018. She led the team in hits, runs and walks. She was a member of the All-Southern Connecticut Conference First Team and a member of the 2016 State Championship team. In her showcase season, she plays for the CT Seahawks.

"As a multisport athlete, Mia has untapped potential," Karwoski said. "With her athleticism, she will be sure to make a positive impact in Friartown."

The Providence College softball team opens its season on Feb. 8 in Jacksonville, Fla. against UMass-Lowell at 2:00 p.m.
