Izzy Mendez named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College field hockey senior goalkeeper Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1.  Additionally, junior forward Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.  Last week, the Friars posted a 2-0 record, including a 1-0 overtime victory against conference foe Villanova on Sept. 28.

Rice earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.  She picked up back-to-back shut-out victories last week against Villanova (1-0, OT) and UMass (1-0).  Her shutout against Villanova marked the first of her career against a BIG EAST opponent, as she collected two saves.  Rice followed with a five-save performance against UMass on Sept. 30. In her first season as the Friars' starting goalkeeper, she has recorded four shut-out victories and owns a 1.39 goals against average and a 0.737 save percentage.

Mendez picked up game-winning goals in back-to-back victories last week. On Sept. 28, she tallied the game winner in overtime to defeat Villanova, 1-0, in BIG EAST action.  The goal came just 2:19 into extra time.  On Sept. 30, Mendez lifted the Friars to another 1-0 win with the squad's lone goal at 40:52 in the second half.  Mendez has scored a goal in five of the last seven games for Providence and is tied for the team lead goals overall, with six. Her six goals and 12 points also mark single-season career highs for the junior.  Last season, she tallied 11 points on five goals and one assist.

Providence returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5 against No. 2 Connecticut. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.  The Friars will remain home for a non-conference match against Fairfield on Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
