Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Softball team played a doubleheader against the Butler Bulldogs on April 8. The Friars dropped the first game 8-3. Providence came back and won the second game, 14-6. Providence's record on the season is now 11-19 (2-6) while Butler now has a record of 17-18 (5-2).
Providence started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) began the inning by drawing a walk. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) then hit her fifth home run of the year to put Providence up 2-0.
Georgetown struck back in the top of the 4th inning to take a 3-2 lead. Georgetown added to their lead in the top of the 7th inning to take an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 7th, Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) hit an infield single. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) then hit into a fielder's choice. With Compton on and two outs, Lee hit a single into right field. Lee advanced and Compton scored after the Right Fielder mishandled the ball to bring the score to 8-3. Providence was unable to score again as Butler took the first game, 8-3.
Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) was the pitcher of record for the Friars. Ramirez's record is now 8-10 on the season.
Both Lee and Lundstrom tallied two hits in the first game.
Providence came roaring out of the gates in the second game of the day. Lee started the bottom of the 1st inning off by reaching on an error. After which both Lundstrom and Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) walked to load the bases. Lee stole home to earn the first run of the game. After a pop out by Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.), Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a three run home run to put Providence up 4-0.
Providence built upon their lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Veler hit a double. Portillo then hit her second home run of the game to put the Providence lead to 6-0.
In the 3rd inning, Kemp walked to give Providence a base runner. Compton then a sacrifice bunt to move Kemp into scoring position. Lee drove in Kemp by hitting an RBI double.
Butler worked their way into the game in the top of the 4th by scoring six runs to bring the score to 7-6.
Providence responded with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the 4th. Veler began the inning by hitting a triple. Mulry followed this up with an RBI double. Portillo continued her hot streak at the plate by hitting a double to score Mulry. Portillo advanced on a passed ball before scoring when the Right Fielder committed an error on a ball hit by Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.). Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) advanced Rurka on a sacrifice bunt. After the sacrifice, Kemp drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Compton laid down a bunt for a single to load the bases. After a strike out by Lee, Lundstrom hit a bases clearing double to bring the score to 13-6.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Mulry ended the game by hitting a home run. The home run brought the score to 14-8 and ended the game based on the run rule.
Michaela Veneziali (Pine Bush, N.Y.) pitched four innings in the victory. Veneziali now has a record of 2-1 on the season.
Portillo tallied three hits with six RBI in the second game. Mulry and Veler each totaled two hits as well.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, April 9 to finish its weekend series against Butler.
