Softball Splits Games Against Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Providence College Softball played a doubleheader against the Georgetown Hoyas on April 2 as part of their weekend series. The Friars dropped the first game 13-5 before winning the second game 9-6.

In the first game, Providence struck first, scoring in the top of the 1st. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.). Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) then drove Lundstrom in by hitting an RBI double to put Providence up 1-0.

Georgetown responded by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.

Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) began the 2^nd inning with a double. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) pinch ran for Rurka. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) drove in Kemp by hitting an RBI double. Lundstrom hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mendez and cut tie the game at 3.

Georgetown scored five runs in the bottom of the 2^nd inning to take an 8-3 lead.

Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a home run in the top of the 3^rd to cut the lead to 8-4 lead.

Georgetown scored another three runs in the bottom of the third to take an 11-4 lead.

Providence cut into the lead when Mendez scored on a wild pitch to take an 11-5 in the top of the 4th.

Georgetown scored another two runs in the bottom of the 4^th to take a 13-5 lead. Providence was unable to score in the top of the 5^th inning and lost the game on the run rule.

Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) was the pitcher of record for Providence. McCune pitched 1.1 innings giving up seven runs on six hits.

In the second game of the day, Georgetown scored first by earning two runs in the bottom of the 1^st. Providence responded in the top of the 2^nd. Portillo began the inning by hitting a double. She was driven in when Kemp hit an RBI single.

Georgetown added to their lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the 4^th inning to bring the score to 3-1.

Providence rallied in the top of the 7^th. Compton started the inning off by hitting a single. Lundstrom drew a walk and Mulry was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Veler drove in Compton by hitting an RBI single. Portillo then hit a single to drive in Rurka. After a pitching change, McCune hit a grand slam home run to Providence up 9-3.

Georgetown attempted to rally in the bottom of the 7^th inning but Providence held on to win 9-3.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game for Providence. In seven innings of work, Ramirez gave up six runs while striking out two.

Providence next plays on Wednesday, April 5 with a game against crosstown rivals, the Brown Bears.
