Softball Drops Games Against DePaul

CHICAGO, ILL. – The Providence College Softball Team played the first two games of its weekend series against the DePaul Blue Demons on Friday, April 14. Providence lost both games, dropping the first game, 8-0 and the second game, 9-6. The Friars now have a record of 12-21 (3-8) on the season.

DePaul jumped to an early lead on which they continued to build upon throughout the game, scoring in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th innings.

Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) and Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) each tallied a hit in the first game.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitching five innings in the loss. Ramirez now has a record of 8-11 on the year.

In the second game of the day, DePaul again struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Providence found some momentum in the top of the 3rd inning. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) got the offense going by hitting a solo home run, her 6th of the season. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) followed Lundstrom's home run up by reaching on an error and advancing to second on the throw. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) drove in Veler by hitting a single to center field.

The Friars continued their momentum into the top of the 4th inning. Compton got the offense going by hitting an infield single. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) drove in Compton by hitting an RBI double to center field. Both Lundstrom and Veler drew walks to load the bases. Rurka took advantage by hitting a double to clear the bases and put the Friars up 6-1.

Providence would be unable to hold the lead as DePaul scored four runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th innings to win the game, 9-6.

Rurka led the Friars with a 3 hit, 4 RBI day.

Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) started the second game for Providence and was relieved by both Michaela Veneziali (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and Ramirez. Trinidad pitched 4 innings giving up 9 hits and 5 runs. Veneziali pitched .1 innings giving up 2 hits and 2 runs and Ramirez pitched 1.2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 2 runs. Ramirez was the pitcher of record, moving to a 8-12 record on the season.

Providence finishes up the series against DePaul with a game at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 15.
