KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Providence College Softball team defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles on March 8 as the Osceola Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. The Friars improved to 4-9 on the season following the win.

The Friars struck out to an early lead in the top of the 2nd inning. Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) began the inning by drawing a walk. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) also walked to put runners on first and second. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) hit a sacrifice bunt to push both Portillo to third. After this Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. Allison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) then drew a walk to push Portillo in for a run. Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) followed this up with an RBI single that drove in Veler and advanced Kemp and Abbatiello. After a strike out by Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.), Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a single that drove in both Abbatiello and Kemp to make the score 4-0.

Niagara was held scoreless until the bottom of the 6th inning, when they scored one run to cut the score to 4-1.

The Friars responded in the top of the 7th. Lundstrom hit a single to start the inning before advancing on a sacrifice by Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.). Portillo then singled to push Lundstrom to third. Veler then hit a sacrifice fly to score Lundstrom for an insurance run and make the score 5-1.

Providence would hold the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the 7th to win the game, 5-1.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game in the win and improved her record to 4-4 on the season. Ramirez let up 4 hits while striking out five in the win.

Lundstrom led the Friars offensively by contributing three hits and two RBI in the win.

Providence next plays in the USF tournament start on March 10. The Friars will take on Monmouth (N.J.), SIUE, Indiana State, Fort Wayne and Western Michigan over the course of the three-day tournament.
