ORLANDO, FLA. - The Providence College Softball team played two games at the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla. on March 5. The Friars defeated FGCU 5-2 before losing to UCF 3-1.
Providence struck first against Florida Gulf Coast, scoring three runs in the top of the 1st inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) began the game by hitting a single. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) followed this up by hitting a single. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) then loaded up the bases by singling. Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) grounded out to the second baseman but Lee scored and Lundstrom and Rurka advanced on the ground out. Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) drove in both Lundstrom and Rurka by hitting a single up the right field line.
The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the 3rd inning to cut the lead to 3-1.
Providence responded in the top of the 4th inning. Lee singled to right field to begin the inning. Lundstrom then hit a two-run homerun to push the lead to 5-1.
FGCU would score once more in the bottom of the 5th to bring the score to 5-2, but would not score again as the Friars took the win.
Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game in the victory for Providence. Ramirez let up 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out five. Ramirez's record on the season improves to 3-3 with the win.
Lee, Lundstrom, and Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) each tallied two hits in the win.
The second game of the day featured a pitching dual between Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) and UCF's pitcher, Alea White. Neither Trinidad nor White let up a run until the 5th inning. In the top of the 5th, Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) reached on an error. Lee then doubled to advance Compton to third base. After a walk by Lundstrom, Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Compton.
