Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Softball team took on the Fairfield University Stags on Wednesday, March 29. The Friars defeated the Stags, 7-1. Providence improves to 8-16 on the season while Fairfield falls to 6-16.

The Friars struck first against the Stags when Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a solo shot to left field. This was Portillo's third home run of the season. Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) followed up the home run with a single. Allison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) advanced Kemp by laying down a sacrifice bunt. This set up Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) to hit an RBI double and drive in Kemp to put Providence up, 2-0.

Providence continued to build upon their lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) began the inning by hitting a single before advancing to second on a passed ball. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) then singled to put runners on the corners. Veler then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Portillo took advantage by singling to center field and driving in Mulry to put Providence up, 3-0.

Fairfield struck back in the top of the 5th inning to cut the lead to 3-1.

Providence added insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. The inning began with back-to-back singles by Abbatiello and Lee. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) then hit into a fielder's choice in which Abbatiello was thrown out at third. Mulry also hit into a fielder's choice as Lundstrom was forced out a second. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit an RBI single to drive in Lee, advance Mulry to third and put Providence up, 4-1. After Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) pinch ran for Rurka, Veler reached on an error by the pitcher. Mulry scored on this error to increase the Friar lead to 5-1. Portillo drew a walk to load the bases and force a pitching change.

With the bases loaded, the pitcher threw a wild pitch and Flego stole home. The pitcher then hit Kemp with a pitch to re-load the bases. Veler then scored on another wild pitch to bring the score to 7-1.

Fairfield could not score in the top of the 7th inning as the Friars claimed the win, 7-1.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game in the win for Providence. Ramirez improved to 6-8 on the season by allowing Fairfield only 4 hits and 1 run.

Portillo and Lee led the Providence offense against the Stags. Portillo went 2-2 on the day with a home run, a single, two walks and two RBI. Lee went 3-4 on the day with three singles and one RBI.

Providence returns to action with a weekend series against BIG EAST rival Georgetown on April 1-2 in Washington, D.C.
