PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Softball team opened up its home schedule with a doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island on March 21. The Friars won the first game 5-2 and lost the second 6-2. The Friars now have a record of 7-13 on the season.

Providence came out of the gates hot, scoring four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) began the inning by reaching on an error by the short stop. Lee then advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) followed Lee up by drawing a walk to put runners on the corners. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a double to left field to score Lee and push Lundstrom to third base. To drive in Lundstrom and push Rurka to third, Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The inning continued when Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Mulry proceeded to steal second base to put two runners in scoring position. Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) hit a single to drive in both Rurka and Mulry and put the Friars up 4-0.

Providence would add another run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Veler reached on an error by the pitcher. Veler stole then second base and advanced on a wild pitch. Mulry drove her home by hitting a single up the middle and put the Friars on top 5-0.

URI would score once in the top of the 6th and once in the top of the 7th but it was not enough as Providence took the first game, 5-2.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game in the win. Ramirez improved her record to 5-6 after allowing only one earned run off of 6 hits.

The second game was a closely contested match for most of the game. Providence scored first after Mulry hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning. URI responded in the top of the second by scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

Providence, however, tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Portillo scored on a fielder's choice by Taylor Stephen (Monarch Beach, Calif.)

URI would go on to score twice in the 5th and twice in the 7th to take the game, 6-2.
