Softball Splits Games On Day Two Of USF Tournament

CLEARWATER, FLA. - The Providence College Softball team played two games on the second day of the USF Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. on March 11. The Friars won an extra innings game against Indiana State, 15-11, before dropping a game against Fort Wayne, 7-6.

The first game was a back and forth, high scoring affair. The game began with Providence scoring two runs in the top of the 1^st inning before the Sycamores responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Providence went had a huge 5^th inning, scoring eight runs to take the lead 10-5. Indiana State responded immediately by scoring five runs to tie the game in the bottom of the 5^th. The two teams needed extra innings to decide the contest, with Providence coming out on top after scoring five runs in the top of the 8^th inning.

Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) each had 3 hits in the win. Mulry added 3 RBI to lead as well.

Michaela Veneziali (Pine Bush, N.Y.) earned the win after pitching 2.1 innings in relief for Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.). Veneziali now has a 1-1 record on the year.

The second game against Fort Wayne also proved to be a back and forth affair. Providence scored 2 runs in both the bottom of the 1^st and 2^nd innings but a four run inning in the top of the 5^th proved to be too much for the Friars as they fell, 7-6 to the Mastodons.

Nadia Kemp (Wappinger's Falls, N.Y.) and Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) each tallied two hits in the loss for Providence.

Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) was the pitcher of record for the Friars. Trinidad is now 0-3 on the season.

The Friars finish the USF tournament with a game against Western Michigan on March 12 at 9:30 a.m.
