Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

ORLANDO, FLA. - The Providence College softball team began its season at the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament in Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 17. The Friars split their two games on the day, defeating George Washington 9-3 before dropping a game against Stetson, 9-3.
The scoring began in the second inning of the George Washington game. After letting up a run in the top of the inning, the Friars strung together a series of hits, scoring four runs, to lead 4-1. Providence relied on key hits by Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.), Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.), Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) to keep the rally alive.
The Colonials began to work their way back into the game by scoring in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, to make the score 4-3. The Friars then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 9-3. The score would not change for the rest of the game as Providence claimed their first win of the season.
Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game for the win, giving up seven hits and three earned runs while also striking out four. Both Lundstrom and Compton tallied two hits apiece.Lundstrom, Compton and Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) drove in two runs each, as well.
The Friars fell behind early in the second game of the day, letting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Michaela Veneziali (Pine City, N.Y.) took over pitching in the second inning and held Stetson to only three runs for the rest of the game.
The Friars scored once in the 4th, once in the 6th and once in the 7th but they were unable to close the early gap, losing the game 9-3.
Brittney Velver (Santa Rosa, Calif.) was a bright spot for the Friars offensively, going 3-3 with a home run and two RBI in the loss.
Providence returns to action on Feb. 18 for games against LIU Brooklyn and Marshall. The Friars will play LIU Brooklyn at 1:00 p.m. before playing Marshall at 5:30.
