Softball Defeats Georgetown, 10-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Georgetown, 10-1 in five innings, on Sunday, May 1 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 20-26 (5-12 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas moved to 9-35 (3-14 BIG EAST).

In the top of the third, Georgetown scored an unearned run to gain a 1-0 lead.

The Friars responded with a single from freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and a single from sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) who each brought in one run for a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Friars had an eight run rally. Senior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought in a run. Graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached first on a fielder's choice that brought in a run for a 4-1 lead. On another fielder's choice, junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) knocked in a run for a 5-1 lead. Rurka hit a double to right field to continue the Friar's rally in the bottom of the fourth which brought in two runs for a 7-1 lead. With bases loaded, Deraney was walked to add another run for an 8-1 lead. Finally, freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit a single to center field which brought home two runs for the final score, 10-1.

Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) started on the mound, pitched five innings and allowed four hits.

The Friars will return to action next weekend with a three-game series versus Villanova on Saturday, May 7 at noon and 2:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
