Softball Defeats Brown In Five Innings, 8-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Brown on Wednesday, April 20 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 16-22, while the Bears moved to 16-17.

In the bottom of the first the Friars tallied two runs on a double from sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) knocked in a run with a double through the middle. Junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) was walked with bases loaded to bring in another run. Next up in the lineup, sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a two-run double down the right field line to put the Friars up 6-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led off with a double to center, Lundstrom then brought in Luttrell with a double to center field for a 7-0 lead. With Lundstrom on third, freshman Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a single to send Lundstrom home for the final score, 8-0.

Junior Taylor Huntly pitched five innings, struck out seven batters, and allowed just three hits.

The Friars will return to action with a game versus Harvard at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, April 21, at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
