Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team earned a split in the double header versus St. Johns on Saturday, April 16 in Providence, R.I. In game one, the Friars were defeated by the Red Storm, 4-0, and in game two the Friars defeated the Red Storm, 3-2. The day's games featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an official Glay Field dedication. With the split, the Friars moved to 15-21 (2-8 BIG EAST), while the Red Storm moved to 20-18 (4-6 BIG EAST).
In the top of the fourth in game one, St. John's tallied two runs for a 2-0 lead. The Red Storm drove in another two runs in the top of the fifth for the final score, 4-0. St. John's held the advantage in hits 13-1.
Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) started on the mound, pitched 4.1 innings, and struck out five batters. She allowed nine hits and four runs. Freshman Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) pitched the final 2.2 innings, struck out two batters, and allowed four hits.
In game two, St. John's scored two runs in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
The Friars retaliated in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single from junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) to send home freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) and tie the game at two. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a home run and the Friars got the win, 3-2.
Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched all seven innings, struck out six batters, and allowed seven hits for her seventh win on the season.
The Friars will return to Glay Field tomorrow (April 17) for a game versus St. Johns at 12:00 p.m.
