PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Fairfield, 6-5, on Tuesday, March 29 in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to 12-15, while the Stags improved to 10-10.

In the bottom of the first, Providence got on the scoreboard after junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) fouled out to second base, which allowed senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) to steal home for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Fairfield tallied two runs to get a 2-1 lead; however, the Providence senior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit a home run to tie the game at two.

In the top of the sixth, the Stags drove in four runs for a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Friars made a run when Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a one-run single to send home Baldassari. With Veler on first and graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) on third, freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) reached first on an error which allowed Veler and Luttrell to reach home for the final score, 6-5.

Freshman Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) started on the mound and pitched four innings. McCune tallied four strike outs and allowed four hits. Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched three innings, struck out one batter, and allowed four hits.

The Friars will travel to Butler for a three-game series to continue BIG EAST play at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on April 2 and 12:00 p.m. on April 3 in Indianapolis, Ind.
