BOSTON - The Providence College softball team battled to within one run into the fourth inning before a late outburst led Boston University to a 10-2 win in five innings on Wednesday afternoon at the BU Softball Field.
The Friars drop to 10-11 overall, while the Terriers improve to 9-11 with the win in their home opener.
Right fielder Emma Lee paced the Friars with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, including an RBI, while Brittany Veler, Danielle Deraney, and Vanessa Portillo also chipped in with hits on Wednesday.
Christina Ramirez got the nod in the circle for the Friars, as she allowed five earned runs on five hits over three innings. Ramirez also struck out three as her record fell to 4-3 overall this season. Kiara Amos surrendered five earned runs in an inning of work.
Providence got on the board first in the third inning thanks to a lead-off double by Portillo, who was eventually knocked in by Lee's infield single. Alex Heinen's bases-clearing double put the Terriers up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning.
Julianne Rurka's sac fly in the top of the fourth inning brought the Friars within a run at 3-2, but the Terriers responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three-run homer by Heinen for her sixth RBI of the night.
Providence returns to action on Friday for day one of the Stony Brook Invitational. The Friars will take on the host Seawolves at 10:30 a.m., before battling Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
