MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Providence College softball team registered back-to-back wins in the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational in Madeira Beach, Fla. The Friars defeated North Florida in the first game of the day, 3-0. Providence then went on to defeat Georgia Southern in extra innings, 7-3. The Friars start the 2016 campaign with a 2-0 overall record.

In the Friars' first game versus the Ospreys, Providence got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when freshman Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) recorded her first career home run on her first career hit. The Osprey's continued to be held scoreless, leading to sophomore Julianne Rurka's (Warrenville, Ill) first career hit on a bunt to get on base, prior to registering her first run of the season to make the game, 2-0. In the 7th inning, Portillo drove in Rurka on a double for her second RBI of the game. Rurka scored her second run of the game after getting on base with a double.

Portillo went 3-4 versus the Ospreys off one homerun and two RBI. Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) registered four strikeouts in seven innings.

In the Friars game versus the Eagles, senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) bunted to get on base and advanced to second off a ground out from freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.). Junior Nicole Lundstrom singled to centerfield and advanced to third on an error, causing Baldassari to score. Sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) singled to left field which drove in Lundstrom to give the Friars a 2-0 lead. Georgia Southern added two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game, 2-2.

In the top of the fifth, freshman Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) was a pinch runner for senior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who reached with a single. Abbatiello scored after Lee singled to left field for Abbatiello's first run of her career and Lee's first RBI of her career. In the bottom of the seventh, Georgia Southern scored a run to send the game into extra innings.

The Friars scored four runs in the eighth inning, with runs from Lundstrom, Rurka, Veler, and junior Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). Lundstrom scored off of Rurka who reached first on a throwing error. After Portillo grounded out and Veler singled, Rurka scored off of Kemp who reached first on a fielder's choice to second. Baldassari singled to right field and was out at second, but knocked in two runs. The Eagles did not score any runs in the bottom of the eighth and the game ended with the Friars' victorious, 7-3.

Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) registered the win for the Friars and pitched all eight innings with four strike outs. For the game, Lundstrom led in scoring with two runs, while Baldassari registered two RBI.

The Friars will return to action for the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational with a double header tomorrow (Feb. 20) against George Mason at 4:00 p.m. and against Siena at 6:30 p.m. in Madeira Beach, Fla.
