Softball Splits Games At Georgetown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College softball team split the first two games of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series at Georgetown today (April 25). The Friars won the first game, 7-3, and fell 8-2 in the second game.  

In the first game of the day, the Hoyas were the first to get on the board. Sophia Almeida doubled down the left field to send Samantha Giovanniello home. Shortly after, Grace Appelbe singled with a bunt to send Almeida home, giving Georgetown a 2-0 lead.

The Friars responded in the top of the fourth inning after
freshman Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a home run, sending freshmen Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) home in the process. The game was then tied, 2-2.

Providence's Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) was caught out on a batters interference in the top of the fifth, while freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) made it home to give the Friars a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Georgetown tied the game again (3-3) after Theresa Kane scored an unearned run.

The Friars regained their lead in the top of the sixth after Veler hit her second home run of the game, also sending senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) home. Providence extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Dederick singled to center field sending senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) and Lundstrom home for a final score of 7-3.

On the mound for the Friars, sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched for 7.0 innings and recorded five strikeouts to be credited with the win. Megan Hyson suffered the lost for the Hoyas, pitching 6.0 innings and recording six strikeouts. 

In the second game, Georgetown got out to a good start. The Hoyas added three runs in the bottom of the first to give them a 3-0 lead.

Veler then stepped up to bat for the Friars in the top of the second, hitting a homerun to close the gap. The homer marked Veler's third of the day.  

The Hoyas then extended their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second after adding three more runs. They also added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-1.

Providence's Paiva singled to left field in the top of the sixth to send Veler home.The Friars were unable to close the gap, ending the game in a 8-2 Georgetown victory.

The Friars are back in action tomorrow (April 26) for the final game of the series at Georgetown. The game is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
