Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College softball team defeated in-state rival Rhode Island, 9-7, today (April 23) in a non-conference match-up at Raymond Field.

The Friars got out to a good start in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) singled to left field to send sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) home, putting the Friars up 1-0.

The Rams responded in the top of the third after Ali Summers hit a single to send Megan Congro home, tying the game, 1-1.

In the bottom of the third, the Friars regained their lead after Lundstrom stepped up to the plate and hit a solo home run. The home run marked her eighth of the season. Providence wasn't finished there. Senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) followed with a home run, also her eighth of the season, which sent senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) home to put the Friars up 3-1.

Rhode Island then managed to score three more runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game again (4-4).

The bottom of the fourth inning saw senior Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) hit her first career home run to earn back the Friar lead (5-4). Providence's Dederick then stepped up to bat to add her second home run of the day and a team-best ninth home run of the season. With the homerun, Dederick also sent Lundstrom and senior Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas) home to give the Friars a four-run lead (8-4).

The Rams closed the gap in the top of the fifth after adding two more runs to make the score 8-6.

Paiva hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to give the Friars a 9-6 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Summers hit a solo home run to bring the Rams within two (9-7). URI failed to get closer as sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) entered the game to collect the save for the Friars.

For the game, Dederick recorded a game-high five RBI while going 3-for-3 with two home runs. Lundstrom went 2-for-3 in the game with one home run, a double and a walk while scoring all three times she was on base.

Freshman Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) collected the win for the Friars in three innings of work. Junior Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) also pitched for Providence, pitching the first three innings while recording one strikeout.

Caitlin Kennedy received the loss on the mound for Rhode Island.

The Friars will be back in action at this weekend for a three-game series at Georgetown. The first two games will be played on Saturday (April 25) at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., while the third game is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start on Sunday (April 26).
