Softball Takes Doubleheader Against Butler

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College softball team played a doubleheader against Butler for its home opener today (April 2). The Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 2-0, in the first game and came away with an 11-2 win in five innings in game two of the three-game series.

In the first game, with a scoreless first three innings, the Friars (
7-13, 2-2 BIG EAST) were the first to get on the board. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) stepped up to the plate first and hit a solo home run to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.

Lundstrom was back at it again in the bottom of the sixth with another solo home run to extend the Friar lead to 2-0.  

The Bulldogs (
14-19, 2-6 BIG EAST) were unable to respond to Lundstrom's home runs, giving Providence its first BIG EAST Conference and home game win of the season.

Pitching for the Friars, sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched all 7innings and registered two strikeouts to record the win. Kristin Gutierrez suffered the loss for Butler, collecting eight strikeouts and allowing two runs and four hits.  

The Friars continued to capitalize on Lundstrom's strength's in the second game.  After senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) doubled to left center to send junior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) home, Lundstrom stepped up to bat with Harrell and senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) waiting on the second and first base, respectively. Lundstrom sent the ball over the fence for her third home run of the day, simultaneously sending Harrell and Dederick home.

The Friars weren't done with the first inning yet. Senior Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) singled to the shortstop to send freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) home. The Friars added two more runs to give them a 7-0 advantage at the end of the first. Sophomore Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) first scored, while Harrell singled through the left side to send Paiva home for the last run of the inning.  

Providence continued to add runs in the second inning. Mulry stepped up to bat, doubling to left center for two RBI's, followed by Kemp singling to right center to send in Mulry for an unearned run. Baldassari then hit a single to send Kemp home. At the end of the second inning the Friars held the Bulldogs scoreless, 11-0.

At the top of third, Butler scored two runs. The Bulldogs Brandyce Sallee hit a home run, sending Kristen Boros home in the process. In the bottom of the third Providence led Butler, 11-2.

In the top of the fifth, Butler's Kristen Boros hit the Bulldog's last home run of the game with a final score of 11-3. With the Friars having an 8-run lead at the end of the fifth inning, Providence recorded its second BIG EAST win of the season.     

On the mound for Providence, Huntly and freshman Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) shared pitching duties. Huntly pitched for 4.0 innings and registered two strikeouts to collect the win. Ramirez pitched for 1.0 innings and registered one strikeout. For the Bulldogs, Kacey Starwalt pitched for 4.0 innings, allowing 13 hits and four earned runs to suffer the loss.

The last time Providence won via the mercy rule was against North Dakota State in the Fresno State Classic in Fresno, Calif. on Mar. 12, 2015.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday (April 4) for the final game of their BIG EAST Conference three-game series against Butler. The game is set to kick-off at 12:00 p.m.
