Softball Splits Doubleheader At Villanova

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader at Villanova on Saturday afternoon. The Friars won the first game, 2-1, in 10 innings and fell in the second game, 5-4.

The first game remained scoreless up until the top of the fourth when senior Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) hit a RBI double to left center, scoring sophomore Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) for a 1-0 Friar lead.

Villanova (20-22, 7-7 BIG EAST) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.

The Friars (10-19, 4-8 BIG EAST) went up 2-1 in the top of the 10th when senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) double to left center to score sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.).

Sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) shut down the Wildcats in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 PC win. Huntly went the distance on the mound, pitching all 10 innings with six strikeouts.

Kate Poppe received the loss for Villanova in 10 innings pitched with 13 strikeouts.

In the second game, Providence got on the board in the top of the first when Kemp singled in senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.). Villanova responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits to take a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats added one run in the third and fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

Providence scored two runs in the fifth with a two-run home run by Dederick, to pull the Friars within one (4-3). The Friars tied it up (4-4) in the top of the sixth when senior Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas) singled to center to score freshman Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.). Villanova was able to retaliate and score what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single.

Freshman Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) and junior Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) each pitched three innings with Amos taking the loss. The two pitchers combined for four strikeouts.

Brette Lawrence picked up the win for Villanova with six innings pitched and two strikeouts. Poppe was credited with the save in an inning of relief and two strikeouts.

The Friars close out the Villanova series tomorrow, April 19, at 12:00 p.m.
