Softball Falls to St. John's In First Two Games

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College softball team played the first two games of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series at St. John's today (Saturday, April 11) in Jamaica, N.Y. The Friars (8-17, 3-6 BIG EAST) were shutout, 6-0, by St. John's (16-13, 8-0 BIG EAST) in the first game of the series, and fell 9-1 in the second game.

In game one of the series, St. John's collected three runs in the bottom of the first inning after Erin Burner hit a home run to send Monique Landini and Krystal Puga home.

The Friars then held the Red Storm scoreless for innings two through five. St. John's added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Providence were unable to respond, ending the game in a 6-0 win, favoring the Red Storm.

Sophomore Tayloy Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) and junior Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) shared pitching duties for the Friars. Huntly pitched for 5.0 innings, allowing six earned runs and registering one strikeout. Amos pitched for 1.0 innings. Francesca Carrullo earned the win for St. John's after pitching 7.0 innings, allowing zero earned runs and recording five strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, St. John's were the first to get on the board, collecting three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Providence responded in the top of the third inning with senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) scoring an unearned run.

The Red Storm extended their lead in the bottom of the third with an additional two innings. At the end of the third inning, St. John's led 5-1.

St. John's further extended their lead by adding another four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The game ended in a 9-1 Red Storm win.

Pitching for the Friars, Amos and freshman Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) split duties. Amos pitched for 2.2 innings, recording one strikeout, while Ramirez pitched for 1.1 innings. St. John's pitcher McKenzie Murray collected the win, pitching for 5.0 innings.

The Friars will return to finish the BIG EAST series tomorrow (April 12) with a single game slated for 12:00 p.m. The game will be televised on the BIG EAST Digital Network and the Fox Sports GO app.
