Softball Opens BIG EAST Action At DePaul

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team will travel to Chicago, Ill. to play DePaul in a three-game BIG EAST series on Saturday, March 28 (doubleheader) and Sunday, March 29 (single game). This series marks the first conference action for the Friars (5-11). Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. ET with the second game starting around 3:00 p.m. ET. Sunday's single game will begin at noon ET.
Providence is led by senior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) who has a team-best .348 batting average, 16 runs batted in and three doubles. Dederick is also tied for first with senior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) in runs scored with nine.
On the mound, sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) leads the Friars in pitching with a 4.67 ERA and three wins in nine appearances. Huntly has pitched 52.0 innings and accumulated 21 strikeouts.
Last time out, Providence competed in the Fresno State Classic on March 12-14 in Fresno, Calif. The Friars went 3-2 in the tournament after defeating South Dakota State (11-1), Montana (3-0) and Pacific (5-4) and falling to Fresno State (6-1) and Cal Poly (4-2).
The Blue Demons (10-16) are led by Dylan Christensen who has a team-best 27 hits. Angela Scalzitti leads the team in batting average with a .400 mark and 14 hits. Mary Connolly has a team-high 22 RBI. Maxine Rodriguez leads the team in ERA at 6.12. Connolly leads the pitching staff in strikeouts with 27 in 67.0 innings pitched.
Following the DePaul series, the Friars will begin a seven-game homestand starting off against Butler in a double header on Thursday, April 2 (noon and 2:00 p.m.) and a single game on Saturday, April 4 (noon). Next, the Friars will host Seton Hall on Monday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 7. Monday's game will be a double header with the start times of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., while Tuesday's single game will begin at noon. Following the BIG EAST play, the Friars host non-conference opponent Connecticut at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8.
