MIAMI, Fla. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by South Carolina, 11-3, at the FIU Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament in Miami, Fla. The game marked the season opener Providence, while South Carolina improved to 4-1.
The Friars took a 2-0 first inning lead on a two-run single by junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.). However, the Gamecocks scored five times in the second inning, highlighted by Samie Garcia's grand slam. Providence pulled to within 5-3 when senior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) led off the third inning with a home run. South Carolina added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning and three more in the fourth to increase its lead to 10-3.
The Gamecocks scored another run in the fifth inning to complete the scoring. The Friars are scheduled to play tournament host, FIU later tonight.
