Providence, R.I. - The Providence College softball team finished eighth in the BIG EAST Conference standings and earned a spot in the eight-team Conference Championship. Providence (23-29, 7-13 BIG EAST) will play the one seed Notre Dame (44-8, 19-1 BIG EAST) on Thursday, May 12 at 4:00 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
In all, the Friars have reached the BIG EAST Championship 10 times (1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011), including four times in the last six seasons under head coach Kerri Jacklets. Providence captured its only BIG EAST Championship crown in 1994.
Providence enters the tournament after taking two-of-three from Georgetown in its final series of the regular season. On Saturday, April 30, the Friars swept a doubleheader versus the Hoyas, 3-1, 5-2. The Friars were led by sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) who pitched 14 innings on the day and gave up only two earned runs. On Sunday, the Hoyas bounced back and defeated the Friars, 8-5. Offensively, junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.) led the team in the three-game series, registering a 1.111 slugging percentage and .333 batting average. Pelland notched two runs, three hits, two home runs and five RBIs.
Providence is 0-3 all-time against Notre Dame in the BIG EAST Championship. The last time the two teams met in the league tournament was in 2010. Notre Dame defeated the the Friars, 6-2, in the BIG EAST Championshiop quaterfinals.
