Providence, R.I. - Providence College softball defeated the Yale Bulldogs in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6, 12-10, 2-1. With the win the Friars improve to 15-20 overall and Yale drops to 7-15.

In game one, the Friars took a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a two-run home run by senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) who had a career day. Providence then extended its lead to 4-0 in the second inning when junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) and junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) each drove in a run.

Providence scored three more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 7-0. Junior Megan McCann (Hopkinton, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple to left field and was driven in by a Abrams, who later scored on a wild pitch. Freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) then notched her fourth RBI of the season by driving in Stratton.

In the sixth inning, the Yale offense came to life and scored 10 runs on eight hits to take a three run lead. McKynlee Westman notched four RBI while Mariclaire Rebman and Jennifer Ong each tallied a pair of their own.

The Friars didn't go away as they responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Stratton belted her second home run of the game to cut the lead to 10-8.

Leading off the bottom of the seventh inning down two, McCann drew a walk and Abrams singled to right field. The next batter was Huber who notched a single of her own to load the bases. Stratton stepped up to the plate and blasted a walk off grand-slam, her third home run of the game and fifth of the season. In game one, Stratton notched four hits, four runs, seven RBI and three homers.

Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched five scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and striking out five. Freshman Sarah Howard (Georgetown, Ky.) earned the victory to improve to 1-0 after pitching over an inning and not allowing an earned run.

In the second game of the day, Yale took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a passed ball. The Bulldogs maintained their one run lead until the seventh inning.

McCann started off the inning with a walk, stole second base and scored on a double by Abrams to tie the game at 1-1. Huber then smacked the game-winning single down the right field line that scored McCann. It secured back-to-back walk off wins for the Friars as they improved to 7-2 at home this season.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 9, when they travel to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on St. John's in a doubleheader starting at noon.
