PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College softball swept a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader versus Georgetown, 3-1, 5-2, on Saturday, April 30.
In game one, Providence (23-28, 7-12 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early, 1-0, lead when junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit the first pitch of the game over the left-field wall. Abrams now has 10 homers on the season. The Friars extended their lead in the second inning behind a two-run homer by senior Ava Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.), her fourth of the season.
Georgetown got on the board in the fourth inning when Jenna Stark hit a solo home run to right field, but it wouldn't be enough as the Friars went on to win the game, 3-1.
Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) earned her 10th victory of the season after pitching seven innings and giving up only one run on four hits.
In game two, the Friars took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.) recorded a double to right field that scored Pandiani. Pelland then extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Hoyas cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning when Jillian Webb belted a two-run homer. In the bottom half of the sixth, Pelland notched her second long ball and fifth RBI of game when she hit a two-run shot to right-center field to give the Friars a 5-2 lead.
Clauss earned her 11th win of the season after pitching seven innings and giving up only one earned run on five hits. On the day, Clauss pitched 14 innings and gave up only two earned runs.
The Friars tallied four home runs on the day, which gives them a total of 55 and a new single-season record. The previous record was 53, set in 2004.
Providence is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Georgetown at Noon in its final regular season game of the season. The three graduating seniors will be honored for their four years of service to the program in a pre-game ceremony.
