South Bend, Ind. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Notre Dame, 12-4 and 7-3, in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 in South Bend, Ind. With the wins, the Fighting Irish improved to 20-7 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. The Friars now have a 13-19 mark and 1-4 in league play.
In game one, Notre Dame totalled 11 hits en route to a 12-4 victory. The Fighting Irish jumped out to an early, 5-0, lead. Heather Johnson gave her team its first run after reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Alexa Maldonado. Next at bat was Dani Miller who notched an RBI single that extended the lead to 2-0. Two batters later, Katie Fleury knocked a three-run homer over the left-field wall to extend the lead to 5-0. Notre Dame added two more runs in the bottom of the second when Johnson notched a homer to right field.
The Friars scored three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 7-3. Freshman Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) got the offense going with an RBI single to down the left-field line that scored junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Cailf.). Freshman Mackenzie Morgan (Sulphur Springs, Texas) then doubled to left-center field to score Kiesel and freshman Morgan Culver (Marlborough, Mass.).
In the fourth inning, Providence cut the lead to 7-4 when junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit a solo home run. However, Notre Dame would go on to score a run in bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth inning en route to a 12-4 victory.
In game two, Notre Dame was again able to jump out to an early lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Brianna Jorgensborg notched a RBI single and Johnson singled through the right side to score two.
The Friars scored in the fifth inning when sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) led off the inning with a solo shot, her ninth home run of the season. In the sixth inning, the Friars added two more runs to tie up the game at 3-3. Abrams notched her second home run of the day and fifth of the season. Senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) registered her own solo home run two batters latter.
Notre Dame answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to win the game, 7-3.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in South Bend, Ind. to wrap up the three game series.
