Queens, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team defeated St. John's, 9-2, Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference game played in Queens, N.Y. The friars have now won four of its last five games.
Providence (17-21, 3-6 BIG EAST) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) notched a two-run home run. The Friars then extended their lead in the fourth inning to 5-0. Senior Ava Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led off the inning with a solo home run. Junior Megan McCann (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a solo home run, her third of the year.
St. John's (16-23, 3-6 BIG EAST) cut the lead to 5-2 after scoring a run in the fourth and fifth inning. In the fourth, Michelle Tilson singled down the left-field line and to score Amber Curry. The Red Storm scored in the fifth when Curry registered a single that brought in Chrissy Montez.
The Friars extended its lead to 7-2 in the sixth behind solo home runs by junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) and Stratton. In the seventh, the Friars add two more runs to make the score, 9-2, when Pandiani hit her second home run of the day and freshman Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsburry, Mass.) came around from second on a single by Abrams.
Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) improved to 7-9 on the season after pitching seven innings and giving up only two earned runs.
Pandiani and Stratton both notched two home runs on the day and combined for five of the Friar RBIs. In the last five games, Stratton has hit five home runs, 11 RBIs, registered a .474 batting average and a 1.368 slugging percentage.
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, April 13, when they host Syracuse at 4:00 p.m. on PC's Raymond Field.
