Providence College Softball Falls to Illinois and Pittsburgh

Providence, R.I. - Playing in its season opening games of the 2011 season, the Providence College softball team was defeated by Illinois, 8-0, in five innings and by Pittsburgh, 2-1, on Friday, February 18 at the Florida International University Annual Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial in Miami, Fla.

In the opener against Illinois, senior Ava Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior third baseman Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) each notched their first hit of the season. Freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) made her debut in the black and white to pitch one inning and face six batters in relief of sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) who pitched three innings. Rubright gave up one earned run on two hits and one walk.

Against Pittsburgh, the Friars took the lead in the fourth inning. Pittsburgh's O'Connell gave up an earned run after walking four straight batters and scoring Providence junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.). Sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) registered the run batted in. However, the Panthers would rally with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the victory.

Providence junior pitcher Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched six plus innings and faced 19 batters. Grosso gave up one hit, zero earned runs and notched a strike out.

The Friars are back in action tomorrow when they play #17 Georgia Tech at 10:00 a.m. and tournament hosts FIU at 4:00 p.m.
