Softball Drops Doubleheader To Villanova, 5-1, 10-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Villanova, 5-1 and 10-7, in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Sunday, May 9 at Raymond Field. With the wins, the Wildcats improved to 27-27 overall and 12-10 in the BIG EAST. The Friars ended the regular season with a 22-27 mark and 10-12 in league. Both teams earned a spot in the BIG EAST Championship which will take place on May 13-15 in Louisville, Ky.

In game one, Villanova totalled 11 hits en route to a 5-1 win. The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead when Molly Manning drove in a run with a fielder's choice, while Amanda Marquez plated another run with a sacrifice fly. Manning then drove in two more runs with a single in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 4-0 and the Wildcats added another run in the fifth inning for a five-run cushion. The Friars scored their only run of the game in the sixth as sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) crossed the plate after an error. Senior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) finished with two hits for the Friars.

Caitlin Delahaba pitched a complete game and allowed one run (unearned) on three hits and struck out three batters. Sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched the first five innings for the Friars before senior Julie Fowler (Langley, B.C.) came in and struck out three batters in two innings.

In game two, Providence rallied to tie the game at four, but Villanova erupted for six runs in the seventh inning to post a 10-7 victory which marked its ninth consecutive win. The Wildcats scored twice in the second inning on a two-run double by Danielle Maricle and added two more runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Providence pulled to within 4-2 in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Bertels. It marked her fourth home run of the season. In the fifth inning, senior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run, while Bertels hit an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.

However, in the seventh inning, the Wildcats scored six times on six hits to regain the lead (10-4). Jess O'Boyle capped off the inning with an RBI single. O'Boyle, Maricle and Tessa Braga each had three hits to lead the Villanova 15-hit charge. The Friars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including a two-run home run by senior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) to cut the lead to 10-7. It marked Bertolette's seventh career home run. The Friars finished with 11 hits as sophomore Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.), Becker, Bertels and Bertolette each had two. Delahaba then came in and retired the next two batters to seal the victory.
