PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior catcher Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) belted two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Providence College softball team to a 6-1 victory over Boston College Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game played at Raymond Field in Providence.
Providence (11-16) scored three times with two outs in the third inning to take the lead. Senior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) singled to drive in sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) who had doubled with one out. Bertels then hit a two-run home run to increase PC's lead to 3-0. Boston College (10-19) pulled to within, 3-1, in the fourth inning when Maria Pandolfo doubled down the right field line to plate Alison Kooistra. However, in the fifth inning, Bertels smacked a three-run home run as the lead grew to 6-1. It marked Bertels' second home run of the game and her second of the season. She finished with five RBIs. Becker and sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) each had three hits for the Friars, who totalled 12.
Freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) earned the win as she pitched all seven innings and allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out five batters.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 10 when they play a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Syracuse beginning at noon.
