KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College softball team pounded out 12 hits en route to a 7-4 victory over the University of Rhode Island Thursday afternoon in Kingston, R.I. With the win, PC improves to 19-24 overall, while URI is now 17-29.
Providence jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when senior Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) scored on an error and classmate Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) hit a two-run single. URI pulled to within 3-1 in the third inning as Brittany Julich hit an RBI single.
The Friars scored twice in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 5-1 as freshmen Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) and Alaina Thomas (San Jose, Calif.) each hit an RBI single. The Rams responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Friars came right back in the sixth inning and scored twice for a four-run cushion (7-3). Senior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) drove in both runs with a double in the sixth inning for the Friars. URI added one run in the seventh inning to complete the scoring.
PC sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) led the way with three hits, while Bertels, Garcia and Thomas had two hits each. In the pitcher's circle, sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win as she allowed one hit and struck out two batters in four innings of action.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, May 1 when they play a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Seton Hall beginning at noon.
