PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Bryant University, 10-2, in the First Annual Pink Out Tuesday afternoon at Raymond Field. Sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a three-run home run, while junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) belted a grand slam to seal the victory in the fifth inning.
Providence (15-22) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Friars loaded the bases before senior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) walked to force in a run. Huber then hit a single to score another run and give PC a two-run edge. In the fourth inning, Huber hit a three-run home run to increase PC's lead to 5-0. It marked Huber's third home run of the season.
Bryant (7-30) pulled to within, 5-2, in the top of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases and Brittany Lischinsky walked to drive in Bryant's first run. Ashley Coon then reached base on a error as Laura Bowen scored the second run.
The Friars then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn the win. Revens drove in a run with an infield hit to make the score, 6-2, and then Huber was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stratton then hammered a long grand slam to left field to complete the scoring. It marked her team-leading fourth home run of the season. Stratton finished with two hits, one run and four RBIs, while Huber recorded three hits, two runs and four RBIs. Revens had two hits, two runs and two RBIs. In the pitcher's circle, senior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) earned the win as she yielded two runs (unearned) on just one hit and struck out five batters to earn her fourth win of the season.
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, April 21 when they host UConn in a BIG EAST doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. The games will be televised by Cox Sports and will be aired via tape delay on Thursday, April 22 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
