Softball Splits Doubleheader At Brown, 3-11, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader at Brown University Thursday afternoon in Providence. Brown took game one, 11-3, but Providence rebounded to post a 4-0 victory in game two.

Brown captured the first game, 11-3, in five innings. The Friars scored first as junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) hit an RBI single to plate sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) to give PC a 1-0 lead. The Bears gained the lead in the bottom half of the first inning when Alyssa Caplan doubled to drive in two runs. Providence evened the score (2-2) in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by senior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.). Brown regained the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning as it scored three runs to go up, 5-2. The Friars cut the lead to 5-3 in the third inning when Abrams tripled and she then scored on a double by senior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.). Brown then scored two runs in the fourth inning and added four in the fifth to seal the win. Amanda Asay capped off the fifth inning with a two-run home run.

Providence posted a 4-0 victory in game two. Freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched a complete game, allowed no runs and struck out four batters as she collected her fifth victory of the season. The Friars took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Stratton hit a two-run single. PC added two unearned runs in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 4-0. Stratton finished with a total of five hits in the two games.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 17 at noon when they play a doubleheader against USF.
