Softball Splits Two Games At Winthrop/Adidas Classic

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College softball team split a pair of games at the Winthrop/Adidas Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. Providence fell to Towson, 9-5, in the first game and then posted a 5-1 triumph over Gardner-Webb.

Against Towson, the Friars outhit the Tigers, 17-7, but the Tigers posted a 9-5 win. PC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI double. Towson scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead as Stef Streets hit a solo home run. The Tigers added to their lead (3-1) in the top of the third inning before the Friars responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Towson then scored four runs in the fourth inning as its lead grew to 7-2. Streets hit another home run, a two-run blast to help her team to a five-run cushion.

Trailing, 9-2, in the seventh inning, the Friars scored three runs on five hits, but it was not enough. Three different Friars had multiple hits, including senior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.), junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) and sophomore Megan McCann (Hopkinton, Mass.) each had three hits. Abrams had two hits and two RBIs, while senior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.), who was playing in her first game of the season, had also had two hits.

Providence then belted nine more hits in the second game and defeated Gardner-Webb, 5-1. The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) hit an RBI double. Gardner-Webb then tied the game in the third inning, before the Friars regained the lead en route to the win. Becker homered in the fourth inning to give PC a 2-1 edge. Becker then doubled in the fifth inning to drive in another run and increase PC's lead (3-1). PC added two more runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory.

Abrams, Becker, Stratton and Bertels each had two hits for the Friars. In the pitcher's circle, senior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) picked up her first win of the season as she pitched a complete game, allowed one run (unearned) on three hits and struck out four batters.

The Friars will play Longwood and Winston-Salem State on Sunday, March 14 in the final day of the Rock Hill/Adidas Classic.
