PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence (13-25, 5-6 BIG EAST)) fell to #17/22 Massachusetts, 8-0, on Tuesday after splitting a pair of games on Monday with Seton Hall. PC lost game one, 10-9, before earning a thrilling 7-5 victory in game two. Junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a walk-off two-run home run in the seventh inning. Becker finished the day with three home runs and six RBIs.
Senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) still leads the team in most offensive categories including batting average (.374), hits (43) and slugging percentage (.626).
Senior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and junior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) continue to split the majority of the pitching duties this season. Maccio stands at 3-5 with a 4.54 ERA while Bertolette boasts a 5-13 record and a 3.50 ERA.
Last season, Providence swept a double header at URI by scores of 14-1 and 4-3.
Rhode Island (9-28, 1-9 Atlantic 10) comes into Thursday's contest (URI plays a double header against Quinnipiac on Wednesday) having won consecutive games for the first time since March 16. The Rams swept a double header against Hartford on Tuesday in Kingston, R.I. On the season, freshman outfielder Courtney Prendergastt leads URI with 15 RBI, five stolen bases and a .333 batting average on 27 hits, five doubles and three home runs.
The Rams' pitching staff is led by freshman Alison Hartzell. She stands at 6-9 on the season with a 3.28 ERA and 96 strikeouts.
Following Thursday's non-conference action, the Friars will resume BIG EAST play with a pair of home double headers. PC will host Syracuse at noon on Saturday before welcoming Pittsburgh on Sunday at 11:00 am.
