PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence (7-16) comes into this weekend's contests boasting an undefeated record at the friendly confines of Raymond Field. In the 2008 BIG EAST opener, the Friars earned a split with Connecticut, winning game one by a 6-0 margin and falling in game two by the same score.
The Friars improved their winning streak to four games with a sweep over Fairfield on Wednesday, March 25. Game one saw PC earn a 2-1 victory behind a Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) first inning home run and a complete game performance from junior Danielle Bertollette (Temecula, Calif.). Bertollette finished the game allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out seven batters. Senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a single down the left field line to score junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) for the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth.
Game two saw Providence come from behind to earn a 5-4 victory. The Friars unloaded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit. Junior Teresa Bertels' (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) two-run double gave PC the lead for good. Senior pitchers Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Alisha Levin (Madisonville, Ky.) combined to help the Friars in the victory. Maccio started and went four innings to earn the win. Levin pitched the rest of the way and struck out two batters. Sheehy accounted for three hits on the day and extended her hit streak to 11 games.
Rutgers (10-17, 2-4 BIG EAST) comes into Saturday's contest following a sweep over Villanova on Wednesday by scores of 8-2 and 5-4 and an 8-0 loss against Hofstra on Thursday. The Scarlet Knights have three players currently hitting over .300. Seniors Amanda Heller and Amanda Shaw are hitting .365 and .302, respectively, while freshman outfielder Lindsey Curran is boasting a .344 batting average. The pitching staff is led by Nicole Lindley. The junior righty stands at 7-5 with a 2.49 ERA. She leads the team with seven complete games and 53 strikeouts.
No. 23/21 DePaul (13-7, 2-0 BIG EAST) will play a double header against Connecticut on Saturday before traveling to Providence on Sunday. The Blue Demons have their own four-game win streak on the line this weekend after victories over Illinois (6-2), St. John's (9-4, 4-1) and Fresno State (6-1). Senior Amber Patton leads DePaul and the BIG EAST Conference with a .466 season average. Junior pitcher Becca Heteniak stands at 7-4 this season with an impressive 2.13 ERA and 10 complete games.
