PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Yale, 4-0 and 5-2, on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference double header played at Raymond Field. Junior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) and senior Alisha Levin (Madisonville, Ky.) led the Friars as they each pitched complete games.

In the first game, Bertolette pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out two batters to lead the Friars to a 4-0 victory. With the game scoreless in the sixth inning, senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) ripped a double down the left field line to score two runs and give the Friars a 2-0 lead. Freshman Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI double, while junior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) added an RBI base hit to increase PC's lead to 4-0. Bertels finished with two hits for PC.

Pitching also was the story in the second game for the Friars as Levin went the distance and allowed just five hits and no earned runs to help PC to a 5-2 victory. Levin also struck out five batters and improved to 1-2.

Yale's Asley Sloan scored an unearned run to give her team a 1-0 lead after half an inning. However, PC freshman Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) and senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game (1-1). Sheehy eventually came around to score on an error to give the Friars the lead (2-1). The lead increased to 3-1 in the second inning when junior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) hit an RBI single. Providence added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make the score, 5-1.

The Bulldogs had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh inning and Katie Edwards singled to center field to drive in one run and cut the lead to 5-2. However, Sheehy fielded the ball and threw a strike to the plate to throw out Sloan who was trying to score from second base. Sheehy extended her hit streak to nine games as she had one hit. Abrams scored two runs for the Friars.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, March 25 when they host Fairfield in a double header beginning at 2:30 p.m.
