Softball Drops Two Games at Amy S. Harrison Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Providence College softball team was defeated in two close games at the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Saturday, March 14 in Riverside, Calif. The Friars were defeated by Longwood, 5-4, and by UC Riverside, 6-5.

In the first game, Longwood scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal a 5-4 victory. The Friars trailed, 1-0, after one inning but junior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) hit a double to score two runs and give the Friars a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, the Lancers compiled five hits, including Kami Nuckols' RBI single that drove in the third run of the inning, and give the Lancers a 4-2 edge.

In the third inning, Providence cut the lead to 4-3 when senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit an RBI double. The Friars then tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.). Nuckols then led off the seventh inning with a triple and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Kramer.

Sheehy finished with two hits and one run, while junior Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) also had two hits and one run. Senior Alisha Levin (Madisonville, Ky.) pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out five batters.

In the second game, UC Riverside rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to post a 6-5 win. The Highlanders took a 3-0 second inning lead, but the Friars rallied with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a solo home run, while freshman Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.), Bertels and Garcia each scored to give PC the advantage.

The Friars stretched their lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning when Rossi hit her second home run of the game and her third of the season. The Highlanders battled back with three runs in the sixth inning capped off by Taylor Thomas' two-run double.

Rossi led the Friars with three hits (two home runs), two runs and two RBIs. Sheehy also had three hits as she extended her hit streak to seven games.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, March 22 when they play Yale in their home opener.
