BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Providence College softball team split two games at the FAIU Strike Out Cancer Tournament Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. The Friars were defeated by FIU, 4-1, and then rallied for a 4-3 win over Fordham.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead against FIU, but the Panthers scored three runs in the fourth inning and never looked back en route to a 4-1 win. Sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) led the Friars with two hits, while the PC pitching staff consisting of junior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) and senior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, Calif.) held the Panthers to just one hit and one earned run.
In the second game, the Friars (2-4) trailed 1-0 after five innings, but scored four runs in the sixth and held on for a 4-3 win over Fordham. The Friars belted six of their 10 hits in the sixth inning, including sophomore Justine Stratton's (Fresno, Calif.) two-run triple. Senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) finished with three hits and one run, while junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) had two hits, one run and one RBI. Maccio earned the win as she pitched a complete game and allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out one batter.
The Friars are back in action on February 22 when they face Missouri and FAU.
