Softball Splits Two Games At Louisiana-Lafayette Tournament

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Providence College softball team split two games at the Louisiana-Lafayette Tournament on Saturday, February 14 in Baton Rouge Louis an a. The Friars fell to Louisiana-Lafayette, 13-2, and then defeated McNeese State, 9-1, in five innings.

In the first game, the Ragin' Cajuns jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead on a two-run double by Melissa Verde and a two-run home run by Gabriele Bridges. Louisiana-Lafayette added another run in the second to increase its lead to 5-0, before the Friars pulled to within, 5-2, in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) and senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) each hit solo home runs to cut the Ragin' Cajuns lead to three runs. However, Louisiana-Lafayette added three runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to seal the win.

The Friars then earned their first win of the season with a 9-1 triumph over McNeese State. PC scored five runs in the first inning, highlighted by Rossi's two-run double. The Friars then added single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to secure the win. Freshmen Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.), Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.), junior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) and senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) each had two hits.

Freshman Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned her first collegiate win as she pitched five innings and allowed just one run on two hits.

The Friars (1-2) will play their last game at the Louisiana-Lafayette Tournament on Sunday, February 15 against Lipscomb.
