Softball Secures BIG EAST Championship Berth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team secured a berth in the BIG EAST Championship after Villanova was defeated by Rutgers on Tuesday, April 29. Providence (24-22-2, 8-10 BIG EAST) clinched the final spot in the eight-team tournament which will be held on May 8-10 in Louisville, Ky.

In all, the Friars have reached the BIG EAST Championship eight times (1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2006, 2008), including two of the last three seasons under Head Coach Kerri Jacklets. Providence captured its first BIG EAST Championship crown in 1994.

The Friars are back in action on Thursday, May 1 when they host Boston College for a single game, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The game, which will be televised by Cox Sports, will be shown via tape delay on Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m.
