NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference double header at Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. Notre Dame (32-17-1, 10-6 BIG EAST) won the first game, 10-1, in five innings, but Providence (24-20-2, 8-8 BIG EAST) captured the second game, 5-3. It marked the Friars' first ever win at Notre Dame.

In the first game, the Fighting Irish scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-1 victory. Linda Kohan and Ashley Ellis each had RBI singles in the first inning and Kohan later stole home plate for the third run of the inning. The Friars cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning on an RBI single by Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.), but they could not get any closer. Notre Dame scored twice in the third inning and added five more in the fifth inning highlighted by Ellis' grand slam. Ellis finished with two hits and five RBIs, while PC's Gina Rossi added two hits. Brittney Bargar earned the win as she pitched five innings and struck out four batters.

The Friars climbed ahead quickly in the second game and went on to win the second game, 5-3. Rossi hit a two-run double in the first inning to score sophomores Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) and Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) and give the Friars a 2-0 lead. PC made the score, 4-0, in the fourth inning when sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) drove in two runs with her seventh double of the season. However, the Fighting Irish scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead in half (4-2). Katie Fleury drove in one run with a triple and she later scored on an error. UND made the score, 4-3, in the sixth inning, but the Friars responded with a run in the seventh inning as Becker hit and RBI single to center field.

Junior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) improved to 9-6 as she pitched five innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out two batters. Sophomore Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) earned her first career save as she pitched two innings and allowed one hit, while striking out one batter. Rossi and Bertels finished with two RBIs each while Becker and classmate Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) had two hits each.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 27 when they face 23rd-ranked DePaul in Chicago, Ill.
